Gerard Pique stands in Roma’s defense against European Super League

Andy Mattioli

Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique recently spoke out against the idea of having a European Super League.

During the event Business Sport Forum de Expansi√≥n, Pique took the stage and addressed the detrimental effects the Super League would have on clubs like Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

“It would be a very limited competition and I am against that,” said the Spaniard. “Many teams such as Aston Villa, West Ham, Betis, Sevilla, Roma would be left out… In the end the big teams would gain a lot of value, but an important part of football would be destroyed.”

“Those are perhaps second-tier teams but they have a huge following of fans. Sporting merit must prevail and this is why I am against the Super League.”
