Former Roma and current Flamengo midfielder Gerson is closing in on a return to Europe.
According to globoesporte, the 24 year-old is nearing a departure from the Rio-based side in order to join Marseille on a permanent transfer worth €20 million plus bonuses.
The deal is of interest to Roma because they are entitled to 10% of the profit Flamengo earn from the deal — thanks to a sell-on clause.
The Giallorossi inserted the clause into the deal when they originally struck an agreement with the Brazilian side for Gerson in the summer of 2019 for €11.8 million.
It will be a second chance in Europe for the midfielder after he experienced a turbulent three-year spell in Italy from 2016-2019.
The Brazilian initially struggled to adapt to Serie A and eventually became a tactical question mark for his managers.
He was utilised in various positions, including winger and central midfielder, and didn’t seem extremely comfortable in one particular role.
Upon returning to Brazil, however, Gerson rediscovered his form and became an integral part of the Flamengo side that won both the Brazilian league and Copa Libertadores in 2020.
