Granit Xhaka on why he didn’t join Roma: “Ask them.”

Andy Mattioli

One of Roma’s biggest regrets during Mourinho’s tenure is failing to reach an agreement for the services of Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka in the summer of 2021, as the Giallorossi refused to meet the Gunners’ demands for the Swiss international.

Moreover, during that same period of time Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta changed his mind and convinced Xhaka – who by then had already agreed to personal terms with Roma – to become a leader for the younger players at the club.

As a result, Mourinho’s main objective for the midfield failed to materialize, with Roma having to settle for in-house solutions and a mid-season loan of Sergio Oliveira from Porto to help push the capital club toward a much needed Conference League victory.

Today’s edition of Corriere dello Sport, quotes Xhaka’s recent comments in regards to his failed move to Roma. “Why didn’t I join Roma? Ask them.”

“I’ll tell you all about it once we’re off the record,” Xhaka continued. “If you ask your Swiss colleagues, they’ll know the story behind it.”
