Jose Mourinho analyzes Roma’s deflating performance versus Genoa

Jose Mourinho reacted to Roma’s shocking display against Genoa in their 4-1 defeat.

In his post-match interview with DAZN, Mourinho commented, “At the end of the match I didn’t talk to the players and when I don’t I don’t feel like analyzing the match and answering the media’s questions.”

“We started badly, the first goal we conced was bad, as was the one in Verona. We had a reaction, after the equalizer Llorente got hurt and the structure of the team changed and got worse.”

“At 2-1 Mancini was booked and with this profile of referee we thought it would be right to change him and for this reason we changed the structure of the team again. After the offside goal I felt we could have equalized, they were sitting low and we had the ball and dominated, even if we didn’t have quality or opportunities. They closed down and we didn’t have any changes with players capable of playing out wide. At 3-1 the game is over, 4-1 is out of context.”

“I don’t want to say too many things, but people talked about Ibanez’s mistakes with the ball in some special matches, but he gave us incredible solidity on a defensive level. You can see the difference in games won with and without Smalling. When we lack players we lack solidity. Every shot on goal is a goal and I’m not talking about Rui Patricio.”

“It’s the worst start to the season in my career,” continued Mourinho. “But it’s also the first time in Roma’s history that we made two consecutive European finals.”

“Genoa played 48 hours before us and lost two players. Yesterday there were five players in the league who got injured due to muscle problems so it’s nothing out of the ordinary. Llorente is also not completely healthy, he has a history of injuries. He is frequently injured, he has played three games in a row and for me it is not a big surprise.”

“We are a team with qualities and defects. There is no time to cry, only internally because of my relationship with the supporters. It hurts me even more, it’s not just a personal thing but a general one. Tomorrow we will go back to work. The next match is worth 3 points, not 6/7/8, but it becomes very very important for us to succeed.”
