Lorenzo Pellegrini assumes new role in Roma’s midfield

Andy Mattioli

Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini continues to grow into his role as the team’s leader on and off the pitch given his recent outings in the midfield pivot alongside Nemanja Matic.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the Italian international held numerous discussions with Mourinho regarding his position on the pitch in light of Roma’s recent transfer activity including the arrival of Paulo Dybala and Gini Wijnaldum.

In order to facilitate a smooth integration of Dybala in the attacking trio with Tammy Abraham and Nicolo Zaniolo, Lorenzo Pellegrini has given his availability to Mourinho to assume a deeper role and play alongside Matic in front of Roma’s defense.

Pellegrini’s preference has always been playing more advanced as a trequartista, but the captain recognized the team’s necessity to include Dybala as one of the key players up front and accepted his new role without any issues.
