Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri was not impressed with the way other Italian teams featured in three separate European finals last season.

In his first press conference of the season, Sarri commented on the state of Italian football and addressed the respective paths that led the likes of Inter, Roma and Fiorentina to conquer European finals appearances in the same year.

“The league is going to be difficult this year, there are teams better equipped than us,” remarked the Italian technician.

“Last year many teams wasted a lot of energy in other cup competitions, whereas this year I don’t think it will happen again. We want to surprise and exceed expectations given that the roster is almost the same as the one from last season, so we have to do something that goes to the limits of our abilities to fight for the Champions League.”

“Serie A is growing slightly. I don’t take at face value what the Italian teams have done in Europe last season, they got lucky in the draws.”
