Today in Milano, Serie A clubs and the top members of the AIA (the Italian referees’ association) met to discuss VAR and its utilisation throughout various episodes this season. For Roma, sporting director Ramon Monchi, who has been an outspoken critic of VAR this season, was present and spoke to present media members after the meeting. These are his words:

“All my support goes to the referees, who have had problems in the lower tiers in recent weeks. For those still injured, I hope they return to the field as soon as possible. Sometimes we forget about the football in the lower leagues”.

A judgement after this meeting?
I am not very objective because since I arrived here in Italy, I have always said that I am in love with the referees, here in Italy they’re at an extremely high level and I’m a huge defender of VAR. I think after 12 match-days, it’s been positive. It’s true that some things have been incorrect, but we can all be wrong at times. I think Italian football is on the right path, we have to continue like this. Meetings like this one are so good, it’s good to compare opinions. I have seen the group of referees listen to the clubs, this is important. We are all on the same path.
