Roma and Jose Mourinho’s hope for Champions League football next season was dealt another blow this evening.
The capital club dropped two points after being held 1-1 by Monza in Lombardia, which dropped them to 7th in the table after Atalanta earned a 3-2 victory over Spezia.
As a result, the Giallorossi now sit two points outside a Champions League spot behind fourth placed Inter, Atalanta, and Milan.Â
The draw extended Roma’s winless streak in Serie A to three, coming at the worst possible moment of the season.
Both sides started the match sloppily with neither creating clear goalscoring chances early on. Just before the half hour mark, Stephan El Shaarawy opened the scoring after linking up perfectly with Tammy Abraham to give their side a 1-0 lead.Â
However, defender Luca Caldirola would level the scoring just before halftime with an incredible volleyed finish that went past a stunned Rui Patricio.Â
With limited options on the bench due to a bevy of injuries, Jose Mourinho made several alterations in the second half by bringing on Mady Camara and Leonardo Spinazzola.
Despite the changes, the Giallorossi were ultimately left frustrated by the hosts and created very little after the break.Â
