Jose Mourinho did not mince words when reflecting on his spell in the Italian capital.
The Portuguese technician was recently appointed Fenerbahce’s new manager after being dismissed from Roma in mid-January.
In an interview with RTP prior to Portugal’s friendly with Croatia, Mourinho explained his decision to move to the Turkish Super Lig and criticized Roma for its lack of winning spirit.
“What made me accept Fenerbahce’s proposal was that I missed playing to win,” said the Special One.
“At Roma I didn’t play to win. Roma played to win because you say that if I’m there I always play to win, but that’s not the case,” he added.
“So much so that nothing changed from the time I left until the end of the season. What we achieved in European competitions was something a little out of the box, but at a national level we couldn’t compete.”
“Fenerbahce at European level will obviously have its difficulties, but at national level… Historically there are Fenerbahçe, Besiktas, Galatasaray, sometimes Trabzonspor, we will fight for the championship and that’s something that motivates me”
“I no longer had that motivation at Roma, I didn’t have it at Tottenham and I miss not being able to drop points and always having to play to win,” Mourinho is quoted saying in Ojogo.
