Roma executive Tiago Pinto and new manager José Mourinho continue to monitor various profiles that could potentially reinforce the capital club this summer.

With Granit Xhaka and Rui Patricio close to joining, ‘The Special One’ will turn his attention to his team’s backline, seeking a new central defender in addition to a high-level replacement for the injured Leonardo Spinazzola, who is expected to miss six to seven months.

According to The Athletic, one of the names that the Giallorossi have their eyes on at central defender is Southampton’s Jannik Vestergaard.

The Danish international has only one year remaining on his deal with Saints and is a player Mourinho has admired over the past few years. As a result, the Portuguese technician is looking to sign the 28 year-old at Roma.

However, Mou’s former club, Tottenham, are also interested in acquiring the defender this summer. The English side haven’t opened talks with Southampton, but his friendship with compatriot and Spurs midfielder, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, could help convince him to move to London ahead of his other options.

In addition, the Dane has reportedly also expressed his preference of remaining in the Premier League versus moving abroad.
