Jose Mourinho has found his key player in Lorenzo Pellegrini, with the Italian midfielder coming up big in the start to this season and scoring his seventh goal of the campaign so far in last night’s home win vs Empoli.
According to La Repubblica, Mourinho’s collaboration with Pellegrini started as soon as the Portuguese manager landed in the Italian capital in early July.
The Special One knew how disappointed Pellegrini was with his last minute forfeit from Euro 2020 due to a nagging injury.
The manager reportedly held several one-on-one talks with the 25-year-old at Trigoria, confronting him about his place in the team and asking about his plans for the future.
Once Pellegrini reassured him he would stay and sign a contract renewal, Mourinho confirmed his captaincy and placed him at the center of Roma’s new project.
Last night Mourinho said of Pellegrini “he’s our connection,” and now we know why.
