Mourinho reacts to late win in Monza thriller

Roma boss Jose Mourinho analyzed his team’s performance in today’s late 1-0 win over Monza.

In his post-match interview with Sky Sport, Mourinho highlighted the difficulty of the match against a strong opponent.

“I think they didn’t deserve to lose,” Mourinho said of Monza. “Obviously I’m happy for the points and mainly because I always felt my team was struggling. I saw players in physical pain and making a lot of mistakes, especially those who traveled a lot in recent weeks.”

“The others were not technically sharp. Monza has good players and a good coach and they put us in difficulty. We won with our heart because we did everything we could to do so. They had scoring opportunities. It was a very emotional match.”

“Without Dybala and Pellegrini we lack a connection going forward. I tried to do it with Aouar but he has a different profile. With two pure attackers we achieved positive results but the truth is that when there are two pure attackers and neither of them is creative, without a 10, it is more difficult for us.”

“They defended very well, Pablo Marì looked like a tree, a fantastic man for them. We lost compactness and they brought in good, fast players. It was very hard. When I saw Azmoun’s ball hit the post, I thought that if it hadn’t gone in it wouldn’t have done so afterwards.”

“El Shaarawy and Zalewski? They both told me not to worry – they said none of those rumors are true. And so I feel calm and reassured.”

“The red card? I didn’t say anything offensive, just a gesture. Last year we played an excellent match in Monza and afterwards some good but inexperienced people had some nasty words towards us. Today the only bench that put on a show and put pressure on the referee was theirs. After a game you shouldn’t talk badly.”
