Mourinho speaks on Smalling’s importance, Roma’s Europa League ambitions

Jose Mourinho discussed several talking points in tonight’s post-match presser after losing to Atalanta.

“I’m not worried about a drop in concentration and intensity,” Mourinho told reporters after the game. “There’s nothing to do, the only thing you can do is work hard when you can. We didn’t have the chance to work from Thursday until today. What worries me is when key players can’t play.”

“Smalling is a key player for us,” he continued. “Look at how we’ve performed without him. This is who we are. And that is why I am super proud of this team even when we lose.”

“Today the loss stems from only a handful of episodes that tell the story of the game. Today we also made some mandatory changes. Even with 9 players on the pitch we hit the post and almost reopened the game.”

“Overall I’m super happy, we are all working on our limits, the only thing that makes me sad is the result.”

“We have to think game after game, with the risk of not making it to the Champions League, but there is also the risk of winning Europa League.”
