Kvaratskhelia’s flashes of brilliance in this season’s opening with Napoli have caught everyone by surprise. However, Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli reveals that the player had been contended in the past by various other teams including Roma.
Ultimately, the Partenopei beat Roma to the punch and secured the Georgian talent earlier in the summer.
“When the conflict Ukraine broke out in February, Kvara returned to Dinamo Batumi in Georgia,” Giuntoli recounted in an interview with Corriere dello Sport. “That’s when we swooped in with a contract proposal. We closed the deal for €10 million.”
“We were faster in our negotiations than Juventus, Roma and Real Sociedad,” he added.
