Nzonzi set for Roma return after Rennes decide against permanent deal

French midfielder Steven Nzonzi is set to return to the Italian after spending the previous twenty-four months on loan at Galatasaray and Rennes.

L’Equipe has reported today that Rennes, who acquired Nzonzi in January 2020, have decided not to engage in negotiations with Roma to sign the midfielder on a permanent deal.

It was widely expected that the Ligue 1 outfit, who finished sixth this past season, would try and keep Nzonzi at the club beyond the expiration of his loan. Nicolas Holoveck, the President of the French side, commented recently on how fundamental the ex-Sevilla man was to their side, hinting that they would do all they can to ensure he remains.

As a result, Nzonzi will return to Roma, however, it’s likely to only be temporary given that both sides want to find a suitor that’s willing to acquire him permanently.
