Roma began the Jose Mourinho era in winning fashion this evening as they swept aside Fiorentina by a scoreline of 3-1.
The Giallorossi put on a show for their supporters, who marked their return to the Stadio Olimpico for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, and started their Serie A campaign under the ‘Special One’ with a strong performance.
On the scoresheet for the capital club were Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who opened the scoring in the first half, and a brace from midfielder Jordan Veretout.
Speaking to DAZN at full-time, the Frenchman was glad that his side got their league campaign off to a quick start.
“Obviously it’s important to win your opening fixture,” he said.
“We suffered a bit because Fiorentina played very well, but we stayed compact. Luckily the supporters gave us a bit extra in the second half and we managed to score twice.”
He added, “We must stay together and continue winning, but this is only the start. I’ve got a good relationship with the manager, but you have to work hard.”
“He asks a lot but he also jokes around and stays close to us. But we must continue like this: hearing the stadium like this with the supporters back is fantastic.”
