Roma got back to winning ways this evening and have advanced to the Europa League quarter-finals.
The Giallorossi knocked out Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1 on aggregate following their victory this evening in Ukraine. Striker Borja Mayoral secured a victory for the Italian capital club thanks to two second-half goals.
The Spaniard is now the joint top scorer of the competition with 7 goals and 2 assists to his name in ten matches.
Discussing the result at full-time, manager Paulo Fonseca lauded his side’s attitude over the two legs against his former club.
“We defended well today, it was very important not to concede a goal in the first half hour,” said the Portuguese technician to Sky Sport.
“Roma has never won a game here before. We want to keep fighting and we’re going to do so until the very end. It’s true that the top four race in Italy is very tight but we also have this competition to worry about.”
“We’re the only one’s who have advanced in Europe and we want to keep going. However, we’re aware that it won’t be easy.”
He continued, “We need to continue being a team that can adapt. Balance is important not only in football, but also in life. This is something I try to pass on to the players and those who work with me.”
