Roma manager Paulo Fonseca complimented his team’s defensive performance following their 1-0 victory over Sampdoria.

The win keeps Roma in the third spot in the Serie A table and marks the capital club’s fourth victory in their last five league fixtures.

“Sampdoria is an organised team but we kept the belief that we could win until the end,” the Portuguese tactician explained to DAZN.

“The team is stronger compared to last year. We deserved to win today and we had the chance to score even more goals. We were in control the entire match.”

“Defensively we did very well. Smalling, Mancini, and Ibañez had great performances, it’s important to have confidence at the back. We did a very good job today.”

Fonseca was then asked about his side’s transfer market plans for this month after Roma welcomed Tiago Pinto to the club following his appointment as General Director.

“Tiago will arrive in Italy in the coming days. We’ll see what happens but we’ve already been discussing what this team needs.”
