One week ahead of their first official match of their 2022/23 season, Roma appeared in midseason form in their final preseason clash.
The Giallorossi dismantled Shakhtar Donetsk 5-0 in front of a packed Stadio Olimpico, with nearly 65,000 supporters in attendance.
It was an incredible atmosphere as the club presented the full first team players and staff to supporters, who gave a standing ovation to the likes of Nicolo Zaniolo, Lorenzo Pellegrini, all the summer arrivals, including Paulo Dybala, and finally manager Jose Mourinho.
The capital club jumped out to a quick 1-0 thanks to a solo effort by Pellegrini. Defender Gianluca Mancini double their lead in the 41st minute before a Shakhatar own-goal gave Roma a 3-0 advantage entering halftime.
Edoardo Bove and Nicolo Zaniolo capped off the scoring in the second half to secure the Giallorossi a 5-0 victory—marking the end of the preseason.
“I’m really glad to have had the opportunity to play in this great stadium tonight,” midfielder Nemanja Matic acknowledged on Roma TV after the affair.
“I’m happy we won. We’ve been working very hard over these last few weeks. The whole team is ready for the next game with Salernitana.”
Adding, “It will be a difficult game, but we’re a tough team and I think we’re ready.”
Mourinho’s men will resume training tomorrow morning at 10.00 CET to officially begin preparations for next weekend’s opening league showdown against Salenitana.
