mlive.com: Two major football teams are coming to Detroit for an International Champions Cup (ICC) match.
Paris Saint-Germain is scheduled to face AS Roma on July 19 at Comerica Park in the ICC tournament.
A pair of French news organizations have reported that European football clubs Paris Saint-Germain and AS Roma are facing off in an International Champions Cup match on July 19 in Detroit. But none of Michigan’s largest sports venues have confirmed plans or even talks about hosting the game, with several ruling it out, including Michigan Stadium and Ford Field.
Detroit Tigers executives are expected to make the announcement at noon on Wednesday at Comerica Park. Multiple sources familiar with the plans confirmed the PSG-Roma match is scheduled to take place this summer on the field the Tigers call home.
A pair of French news sources first broke the news in April that the match would take place in Detroit, but no major Michigan venues at the time were confirming plans to host the event.
In the past, Michigan Stadium hosted Real Madrid vs. Manchester United and Real Madrid vs. Chelsea FC, but the massive Ann Arbor venue could not host this year because of a major art fair and road construction taking place at the same time.
Ford Field is undergoing renovations this summer, and won’t host any events until the Detroit Lions preseason events.
Comerica Park has a capacity of 41,782. The open-air stadium will offer visiting soccer fans a broad view of Downtown Detroit.
