Roma have prioritised the extension of Chris Smalling’s contract given his importance to José Mourinho’s squad.
According to calciomercato.com, initial doubts regarding the defender’s physical condition have been mostly dismissed.
The two parties are both interested in continuing to work together beyond this campaign.
Smalling – who arrived at Roma in 2019 – has a contract that expires in 2023.
The club are reportedly in contact with the centre-back’s entourage to grant the 32-year-old an additional year, thus extending it until 2024.
Over the last few months, Smalling rediscovered his form and has proven his veteran status and intelligence by providing Roma with much needed defensive stability.
