Roma are being linked with Belgian defender Arthur Theate of Rennes.
The capital club are famously searching for additional defensive reinforcements ahead of the January window given Marash Kumbulla and Chris Smalling’s unclear return to the pitch.
According to Corriere dello Sport, however, the matter is not simple as Roma’s budget for January is extremely limited due to the various FFP constraints the club must respect at all costs in order to avoid fines and/or transfer bans.
Thus, the Italian newspaper claims Roma have been in contact with several intermediaries in recent weeks, assessing the current market.
One of the players that have been offered to the club is Rennes defender Arthur Theate, Lukaku’s teammate with the Belgian national team.
The 23-year-old is having a hard time in France and could consider a move away from Rennes in January.
Relations between the two clubs have improved since initial tensions over Nemanja Matic’s controversial transfer. Roma would be willing to sign Theate on loan.
Theate can play both as a centreback and fill in as a left-back.
