Roma legend Aldair backs decision to appoint Daniele De Rossi as head coach

Andy Mattioli

Legendary Roma captain and defender Aldair shared his view on Daniele De Rossi’s return to the club as head coach, replacing Jose Mourinho mid-season.

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Aldair argued in favor of De Rossi’s arrival.

“Roma’s choice is right,” said the Brazilian centre-back. “The fans loved Mourinho very much, but the results were just not there and in these cases it is normal that the club can change.”

“When you have such an important coach that he always asks a lot of you, it could happen that some players suffer in the long run. In fact, I think that if they had gone ahead it would have been Mou to leave: he wanted the club to sign players they just could not offer him.”

“Daniele [De Rossi] wants to do this, he believes in his mission, he is determined to do well. He has always very been close to important coaches as a player, he had a good experience with Mancini in the national team, while the one at SPAL didn’t go very well. But almost 5 years have passed since he stopped playing playing, his dream is to coach.”

“Roma did well to focus on him, certainly not because of his experience, but because he is a local boy. I believe he can do well, let’s hope the team follows him in his great desire to do well.”

“I don’t know if his Roma will play better than Mourinho’s, but I am convinced that they can do better in terms of results. The fact that he knows many of the players can help him in managing the locker room, even if as a coach the relationships are obviously different.”

“He did well to accept this challenge: the team is not very strong, but I believe it can come back and fight for the¬†Champions League until the end. Pellegrini? He’s an Important player, and needs to get back to form. I’m curious to see if Daniele will immediately relaunch him as a starter or not.”
