Il Corriere dello Sport: There’s a backstory behind the latest on Szczesny, who at a dinner with the president of the Polish Football Association, Zbi Boniek, confided his intention to the former Roma player that he’d like to continue playing in Rome. At the crux of the matter? Arsene Wenger, who is the foster father of Szczesny but is also the man who sent Szczesny away in favor of others.
In recent months, Szczesny has mulled the possibility that Wenger could leave Arsenal and, therefore, took into serious consideration the option of returning to London, where his contract expires in 2019. But, if Wenger stays, it is still difficult for Szczesny to be promoted as the starter.
How would this involve Roma? It’d be easy to convince Arsenal. But as for Arsenal? They are asking nearly €20 million for Szczesny but then there is also the prospect of Alisson, who was bought for €8 million and has grown a lot. Roma, with or without Spalletti, believe Alisson has earned the starting spot for the future and Alisson isn’t willing to accept another season as the second choice. So after a long courtship last summer, it could be Roma who call it quits with Szczesny this summer.
