Roma to extend Smalling’s contract for one more year

One of Mourinho’s most reliable players, Chris Smalling has overcome the physical issues that had sidelined throughout most of the season’s opening and made an important return to the team’s starting eleven, helping Roma keep several clean sheets over the past few weeks.

The ex-Manchester United man is essential in providing Roma with stability at the back, without committing fouls and keeping a clear mind even in the more difficult stretches.

According to Corriere della Sera preparations are well under way to extend the Englishman’s contract for an extra year given that his current one is set to expire in 2023.

On Mourinho’s request, General Manager Tiago Pinto is working to secure the extension, spreading Smalling’s considerable salary over two seasons, and thus lowering the club’s wage bill.
