Roma turn their attention to Alkmaar’s Koopmeiners

One door closes, another doors opens.

After failing to reach an agreement for Granit Xhaka, Roma turn their attention to other options in order to reinforce the midfield.

According to Il Tempo, among many names, the main candidate for the job is Teun Koopmeiners.

The 23-year-old captain of AZ Alkmaar has been linked to a number of clubs including Atalanta, Napoli and Mourinho’s team.

The Dutch international wants to play on a bigger stage and Roma have been in talks with his entourage for a while now, with the player admitting a couple of weeks ago that he was in conversation with several teams, looking to play outside of the Eredivisie.

Roma consider the Dutchman a fitting alternative to Xhaka. They identify in him the leadership, strength and charisma that Mourinho considers key in a midfield alongside Roma’s Jordan Veretout.

With the campaign starting in three weeks’ time, Roma will now accelerate the negotiations for a new midfielder.
