Roma travel to Liguria on Monday evening for their tenth league fixture of the season against Sampdoria.
The Giallorossi return to action after their impressive midweek performance against Real Betis in the Europa League, earning a 1-1 draw.
Sampdoria, meanwhile, are desperate to turn around their fortunes as they sit bottom of the Serie A table on 3 points.
The Ligurian side recently sacked manager Marco Giampaolo and replaced him for former Inter midfielder and Red Star boss Dejan Stanković.
He debuted on Sampdoria’s bench last weekend with the team earning a 1-1 away draw against Tiago Motta’s Bologna. The result earned them a valuable point but kept them winless on the season with 3 draws and 6 defeats.
Monday will also mark the first time Stanković has faced his former Inter coach, Jose Mourinho, since his retirement from playing in 2013.
“We’re taking on Roma on Monday, who’ve got my friend and former coach Jose Mourinho at the helm. I spoke to him before coming here. I think he’s a top coach but when the game kicks off we’ll be fighting on different fronts,” he said at his Friday pre-game press conference.
“We’ll be friends again after the match. We’ve worked well this week and the lads are ready for the game. I want us to show the same attitude as was on display in the second half against Bologna.”
Monday will also be a crucial test for the Giallorossi as they prepare for their second match in a row without injured star Paulo Dybala.
The Argentine strained his hamstring in last week’s home win over Lecce and he’ll be out of action for nearly a month.
Given his absence, Jose Mourinho is once again expected to utilise Tammy Abraham and Andrea Belotti in a two-striker system.
The former Torino man is coming off a brilliant midweek performance against Real Betis as he collected a goal and nearly secured a brace before being ruled offsides.
Kick-off is scheduled for 18.30 CET local in Genova.
