Roma want Gladbach’s Zakaria and a defender for January

Despite the international break being in full swing, Roma are planning out the upcoming January transfer window. General Manager Tiago Pinto is also working on several renewals including those of Nicolo Zaniolo, Jordan Veretout and Gianluca Mancini.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Denis Zakaria of Borussia Mönchengladbach remains the priority for January. The Swiss international has refused to renew his expiring contract with the German side and is reportedly in talks to join Roma as soon as possible.

A deal of this magnitude could be made thanks to Roma off-loading Steven Nzonzi and saving over €5 million in wages.

Additionally, Pau Lopez has already disputed seven games for Marseille. After reaching 20 appearances, the obligation on the Spaniard’s loan will be triggered giving Roma an additional €12 million.

Finally, Roma are reportedly also looking to strengthen their backline given Chris Smalling’s fragile physical condition and Bryan Reynolds’ timid development.

The capital club want to bring in somebody that could fill in as a back-up to Rick Karsdorp as well as play more centrally if needed.
