Salernitana director Sabatini hints at talks over Fazio

Newly appointed sporting director at Salernitana Walter Sabatini made his first official appearance in today’s press conference for the club.

The ex-Roma director was asked to speak about the coaching position, with earlier rumors linking Roma legend Daniele De Rossi with a first managerial job at Salernitana.

Sabatini denied these rumors, saying “For me Daniele is like a son, but he is not qualified for the job at the moment.”

He further emphasized his trust in managers by recalling the faith placed in former Roma boss Rudi Garcia before appointing Luciano Spalletti in the 15/16 campaign:

“I protect my coaches, I even go to the stake if necessary. You will remember the battle I held in Rome not to sack Garcia, I had a feeling of gratitude toward him because of the record of consecutive victories gained the previous season.”

“Then things didn’t go well: I hesitated a lot, but then I called Spalletti who, in my opinion, had a lot of impact as evidenced by the 87 points collected the following year.”

Here, Sabatini touched upon Federico Fazio – excluded from Mourinho’s plans and recently linked with a move to Salernitana until the end of the season:

“Do you know who was the centre-back of that Roma under Spalletti, the one that scored 87 points? Federico Fazio. Why am I mentioning him? It is not a coincidence that I mention him.”
