Former Roma defender Sebino Nela shared his insights on the team’s performance this season ahead of this weekend’s Derby showdown between the Giallorossi and Lazio.

Nela, who was previously the director of Roma’s women’s side, also commended Daniele De Rossi for turning around the Giallorossi’s season following his appointment in January.

“I’ve known De Rossi since he was a child, he’s an intelligent guy. He’s learned a lot and shown himself ready to manage Roma,” Nela told Radio Romanista.

“If I were in charge, I’d extend De Rossi’s contract: I wouldn’t go after big names with high wages, especially considering the club’s uncertain future. Given the results, I think De Rossi’s proving worthy of a confirmation [as permanent manager].”

He continued, “Let’s see how the last part of the season goes, but as it stands today I’d absolutely renew his contract. He’s an empathetic character—I had zero doubts about his ability to create a good atmosphere in the dressing room.”

Nela was also asked his thoughts on Saturday’s much-anticipated Derby della Capitale and if Paulo Dybala can deliver a strong performance for the Giallorossi.

“For me, the Derby was always a difficult experience: you couldn’t sleep the night before because all our Roman teammates kept everyone awake,” he joked. “They were nervous and very tense ahead of kick-off.”

“As for Dybala, he has extraordinary qualities. You can tell when he’s ‘on’ because he’s so good and his quality stands out. Hopefully he can be a protagonist because Roma’s season will play out against Lazio then Milan [in the Europa League].”
