Chris Smalling is being linked with a surprise move away from Roma.

The Englishman has been unavailable for the majority of this season, closing in on a 5-month absence due to a chronic knee injury which seems to prevent him from returning to training.

Despite holding numerous consultations and undergoing sessions of physiotherapy, Smalling’s comeback is a matter of great uncertainty at Trigoria.

The latest whispers reported by Radio Radio journalist Ilario Di Giovambattista claim the veteran centre-back is unhappy with his situation at the capital club and has even gone as far as requesting to be moved to Saudi Arabia – where he’s drawn interest – for free before the transfer deadline.

Roma, however, have no intention of letting him go for free after renewing his contract in the summer – the club are said to have denied Smalling’s request.
