Roma defender Chris Smalling returned to the fold this evening, making his season debut versus CSKA Sofia in the Conference League.

The Englishman has been out since early August after he suffered a hamstring strain in training.

Starting alongside Gianluca Mancini, the veteran managed to play all ninety minutes in the Giallorossi’s 5-1 victory over the Bulgarian side.

“It’s a great feeling (to return) because it’s been awhile since I last played a match at the Olimpico with the supporters present,” stated Smalling to Roma TV.

“It was my first game this season, so right now I’m focused on doing well in the next one.”

He continued, “We’ve started the season well, but there’s still so many matches left to play. Now we have to focus on recovering ahead of Sunday.”

“The squad is showing great ambition this year. We’ve got that momentum now and we need to keep building on it.”
