It appears that Chris Smalling may have played his final match for Roma.
Sky Sport has reported that Roma and Manchester United have failed to reach an agreement on a permanent deal for the 30 year-old defender, who joined the Italian side on loan last summer.
Both Smalling and manager Paulo Fonseca made it clear that they both wanted the Englishman’s loan move to be made permanent, however, the Red Devils refused to lower their asking price for the player.
The Giallorossi will now be forced to face Sevilla in the Europa League without arguably their best defender, who will likely be replaced by Roger Ibañez in the starting eleven.
It is still possible that Roma could approach United after the completion of the Europa League, but there is still pessimism that a deal could ultimately be concluded successfully.
