Chris Smalling is finally back after missing over a month and a half due to a muscle injury. The English defender had his first start for the Giallorossi vs Zorya Luhansk since he went down in the dying minutes of Roma-Empoli on October 3rd.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Smalling is still Mourinho’s preferred option in the defense. The Special One values his experience, pace and physicality as well as his leadership skills that have been missing in his absence.

The Portuguese technician went reportedly as far as to dedicate an entire staff to improve Smalling’s condition and accelerate his recovery.

It remains to be seen whether Smalling will manage to solidify his role in the starting eleven. Right now, Smalling is fighting for a spot with Marash Kumbulla.
