English footballing legend Sol Campbell was recently asked about Chris Smalling’s development and rise as one of Serie A’s top defenders ever since joining Roma in 2019.
In an interview with Tuttomercatoweb, Campbell expressed his opinion on Smalling’s future decision with regards to the possibility of becoming a free agent in June and returning to England for his final career years.
“Smalling left Manchester United and went to a big club – Roma,” Campbell said.
“Yes, he could come back, I read the rumors, but he’s at a big club already. Roma is not a small club: it’s true, and I understand that the Premier League has its appeal, its charm, but there’s not always a need to go back.”
“Sometimes you do it for the family, for personal reasons, but there’s no need to do it if you’re looking for another professional challenge. Roma is it.”
