Roma manager Luciano Spalletti spoke to AS Roma Match Program ahead of this week’s matches against Porto and Udinese, here is an excerpt of his words:

“Wednesday, August 17 officially starts the new season for the team. This preliminary playoff with Porto is crucial for us and we have worked hard to prepare well. Any opponent we were matched with from the draw would be a crucial game for the team, for my team, for our environment.”

“It’s very important match and we need to be ready. It’s clear that if we were seeded it would have been better, but we have to think like a high-level team and must be ready to face whatever name appears before us, without bothering to pick a team ober another.”

“Our effort should be consider all the opponents strong, but also be convinced that we can go through against anyone. I am convinced that this will happen and it will be a tough game. Our opponent, the Porto, has tradition and has important players in their roster. We will be playing the first match away at the Dragão. I already know the stadium from when I was with Zenit: the environment is very particularly intense, but then it’s up to them to come to the Olimpico and they will be met by our fans, who will support us and seek to put our opponents in difficulty.l

“In the first leg, we will have to put into practice what we have said from the beginning: have our foot on the accelerator right away. Roma is built to play against opponents of our level, fscing these great clubs needs to be the norm for us.”

“It’s going to be difficult to pass the preliminary round and win the first game of the league, the latter match embeded between the first and second leg, but we are built to win important matches.”
