Milan manager Stefano Pioli expressed his disappointment at the Rossoneri’s defeat to Roma in tonight’s first leg of the Europa League quarterfinals.
The Italian technician addressed Daniele De Rossi’s unexpected decision to field Stephan El Shaarawy on the right flank which made life more difficult on players like Leao and Theo.
“We didn’t expect El Shaarawy on the right but nothing changed: Theo and Leao found less space but we still created a lot,” Pioli told Sky Sport.
“We created situations and took many shots but without any quality. In the second half we did better, we were more compact. I thought we lacked the spark that would make the difference.”
“I expect a lot of pride and a lot of desire to demonstrate that we are a great team in the return leg. Overturning this result is not easy, only great teams can do it: I told the team that if there is a team that can do it, it’s us.”
“The referee? I like talking about football more, but it seemed to me that the offside which then led to the corner kick was there. Abraham wanted to head the ball but then he hit it with his hand.”
