Out of contract defender Jamie Vertonghen will not be joining Roma this summer.
Belgian outlet Het Laatste Nieuws has reported that the 33 year-old will soon undergo medical examinations with Portuguese side Benfica, where he is likely to team up with Edinson Cavani.
Reportedly, the Lisbon-based side was willing to offer the Belgian international a three-year contract, which ultimately made the difference in his decision.
All of the other clubs interested in Vertonghen were unwilling to go beyond a two-year deal or a two-year plus an option for an additional year contact.
Roma were eyeing Vertonghen to possibly replace Chris Smalling, who recently returned to parent club Manchester United following his loan spell in the Italian capital.
