Roma midfielder Gonzalo Villar has been one of the revelations this season in the Serie A.
The Spaniard had a slow start to life in the Italian capital after joining the Giallorossi in January 2020 from Elche. The club allowed him plenty of time to settle in and their patience appear to have paid off.
So far this season, Villar has tallied 25 total appearances in all competitions. His performances have caught the attention of several clubs throughout Europe, including Atletico Madrid.
When asked about the interest from Diego Simeone’s side, Villar admitted that he was flattered. However, he conceded that life is going incredibly well in Rome and he isn’t considering an exit.
“It’s always a pleasure to know that such a club is interested in me,” he said to ‘El Transistor’ on Onda Cero.
“However, everything is going incredibly well in Rome – both on a sporting and personal level. This club trusted me and made me part of an ambitious project.”
He continued, “In Spain, I wasn’t presented with a project anywhere near the level of Roma. This is why I chose to go to Italy and now I’ve started to garner attention. However, I realise that in Spain that there are plenty of people who don’t know who I am.”
