Legendary Roma defender Vincent Candela discussed Romelu Lukaku’s impact on the capital club in an interview with Retesport.
To begin with, Candela shared his thoughts on Roma’s uneven start: “We started very badly, then with hope and great quality we returned. Four consecutive victories are good for morale.”
“This summer we saw important players arrive and the coach has great quality. This must be the norm for Roma, we must continue like this.”
“We’ve been very good in Europe, and the win against Monza at the death was a huge relief. But we always have to do more because the quality is there.”
“I have always appreciated Cristante a lot, already three-four years ago when he was highly criticized. He is always there, from the first to the last day. He has his limits, rightly so. Lukaku, Dybala, Pellegrini, Smalling are fundamental players but a solution must be found because it is not possible that so many champions and players are always missing due to injuries. We need to take Cristante’s example and study it, because it’s not a coincidence when someone gets hurt.”
“Batistuta and Lukaku? I agree, they’re similar. But other players are also needed. With all due respect to my friend Bati, at the time Roma also had Totti, Montella, Delvecchio, Cafù, Samuel, Tommasi, Zanetti… And so Bati was important, because the striker is the one who scores goals. The first year he scored many goals. The second year if Batistuta had been at 60% we would have won the Scudetto again. I’m not saying that Lukaku is alone in the department, Belotti is also there, but the Belgian striker is an extraordinary player.”
“He’s a striker, he scores goals. Lukaku has had the same experiences as Batistuta, at times he has had the same difficulties as him. We’ll see in two or three years.”
